Role:

Exciting opportunity for a Design Manager to oversee Highway and environmental schemes including marine works.  With current contracts near Colchester & Great Yarmouth, you will be required to attend site meetings with Client & suppliers, and visit regional offices in Birmingham & Derby for regional meetings as and when required.

Role Summary:

Control, coordinate and supervise the issue and recording of all drawings and documents produced by designers, subcontractors and other third parties for our design and construct projects.

 

Duties:  

As Design Manager your duties will include:

  • Control and monitor the approval procedure of drawings by the client and other third parties
  • Review all incoming documents and drawings for compliance with project contract requirements and collate comments from site staff for issue to the designers
  • Coordination of interfaces between subcontractors, suppliers and other third parties
  • Provide day to day liaison with the project designers and monitor their progress against programme and coordinate this progress with site activities
  • To provide a link between site Engineering staff ad Designers.  Review all design queries prior to issue to designers to ensure that the queries are answered efficiently.  Monitor the progress of design queries
  • Attend and produce minutes for design coordination meetings with the client, subcontractors, suppliers and other third parties
  • With training, undertake planning and checking role for temporary works in accordance with company procedures
  • Develop innovative design solutions to clients briefs with input from the professional team and subcontractors;
  • Develop relationships with clients during early concept stages; manage expectations of the project through regular communication and discussions regarding requirements and specifications;
  • Chair and minute design team meetings and design workshops to arrive at solutions which are cost effective and meet the requirements of the procurement and construction activities.
  • Manage the relationship for the whole project team - with the client, subcontractors and professional team resolve any queries;
  • Understand the process and risks/opportunities related to managing the design with regard to Employer’s Requirements, Contractors’ Proposals.
  • Identify and check contents of Contractors Proposals, qualifications list, design information and marketing documentation for the tender and then be able to deliver compliant design within these parameters.
  • Adopt a proactive approach to value engineering throughout the design phase, by keeping up to date with latest construction techniques and legislation;
  • Develop and utilise scope sheets for each package in conjunction with Project and Commercial Managers to align with duties schedule and utilise these to feed design and procurement programmes and direct design team;
  • Develop and manage the programmes for the production of information for both procurement and construction purposes. Be able to control information flow to suit these parameters from consultants and sub-contractors alike and be able to identify and report when problems are occurring and deal with no-performing parties in a robust fashion;
  • Produce, monitor and drive production though appropriate use of KPIs for the design process;
  • Review the design on an ongoing basis, identify potential interface problems & practicalities in construction, and resolve with the design team and specialist subcontractors;
  • Attend appropriate Contractor selection interviews, including preparation beforehand;
  • Review any subcontract enquiries to subcontractor designed packages;


Requirements:

To be considered for this Design Manager role you must meet the following criteria:

- Knowledge of Civil Engineering Sector.
- Previous employment as a Design Co-ordinator, D&B Coordinator, D&B Manager or Design Manager. Also open to consider Civil Design Engineers or Structural Design Engineers / Projects engineers looking to transfer experience over to main contractor side.
- Previous experience in Highways, Civil Engineering or Marine works.
- High level of communication skills.
- Relevant industry qualification (Degree / HND / HNC etc).

Remuneration:

The successful Design Manager will receive:

*£50,000 - £65,000 Basic (Dependent on experience)
