In this Blog we spoke to people working in the gaming industry to get their feedback on Game Engines “Unity” and “Unreal”, these being two of the most common used in the Gaming industry.
Background
Firstly lets look into a little background.
Unity
Unity is a cross-platform game engine developed by Unity Technologies, first announced and released in June 2005 at Apple Inc.'s Worldwide Developers Conference as a Mac OS X-exclusive game engine. As of 2018, the engine had been extended to support more than 25 platforms.
Unreal Engine
The Unreal Engine is a game engine developed by Epic Games, first showcased in the 1998 first-person shooter game Unreal. Although initially developed for first-person shooters, it has been successfully used in a variety of other genres, including platformers, fighting games, MMORPGs, and other RPGs.
Comparison
Unreal
Pros - Highest fidelity art, Visual scripting so easy for non programmers,
Cons - large and slow, horrible to do actual code in without visual scripts to link things, very much tied down
Unity
Pros - Faster, logically puts games together more efficiently and code friendly
Cons - Not so good art (out of the box), have to do the setup yourself. Will need to know some code at least to use.
Conclusion
The general opinion was that Unity was better for coders, whereas Unreal was better for artists.
It was also noted that Unity has made massive leaps in visual fidelity and is capable of similar/close to unreal visuals in modern versions, as such shouldn't be looked down upon for this.
We would be delighted to hear your thoughts on which Engine you prefer or any further comparisons you have to add?
